Every drop is important- Let’s save it.
Water is an important source for each and every element of nature. The availability of water is undoubted but the accessibility to fresh drinking water is reducing at a rampant rate. At any given time, only around 0.02% of available water on earth is safe for drinking. Human Activities have surely been affecting the numbers on the negative side, and it seems as if the specie of Homo sapiens is determined to realise the lines from ‘The Rime of Ancient Mariner’ by Samuel Taylor Coleridge which reads as “Water water everywhere, Not a drop to drink” With the rampant pollution of the fresh water resources, it is a matter of serious concern that the accessibility to drinking water is an issue of anxiety in the doab of Ganga and Yamuna River. Though the damage has already been done, the Research and Relief Society have been actively involved with facilitating scientific research, organising awareness campaigns, creating mass involvement at the local level and sensitising the denizens towards the issue in order to motivate them enough to take positive action towards the protection and conservation of water.

1. Reviving River Kali- An effort to prevent a debacle
River Kali, an important waterline of districts like Saharanpur, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar merges into River Hindon after covering a distance of over 150 kms. During its course through 7 districts of Western Uttar Pradesh, it is forced to accommodate the water coming out of industries, sewages, slaughter houses etc. The river was an important source of irrigation for over 1200 villages which locate on its catchment but this is history now. The present situation is worth pity as even an animal would fall ill drinking its water. The river has been polluted to the limits that the foul smell itself would not let anyone come near itself.
It has been over an year when Research and Relief Society, engaged in deeds relating saving of water and its sources, chose River Kali as one of its spheres of work considering the pitiful situation, it is passing through. The organisation took up the task of empowering the villages located on the catchment of the river in Meerut and Muzaffarnagar. Awareness campaigns have been launched all over sensitising the villagers about the river and the catastrophe waiting to happen if the inhuman activities of river pollution continue unwarranted.

Kali Nadi Raksha Samitis have been formed in each of these villages, involving 20-25 youth of the same village. These committees have been working towards preventing domestic pollution of the river at their levels and also have been involved in raising voices on behalf of river to the government authorities by submitting petitions to the District Magistrate, Chairman, CPCB etc. associating themselves with the Research and Relief Society.
These committees have ensured that there would be no pollution from the village, extraction of soil from the river bed has been stopped and the water logging has been cleared and would be done in the future to prevent leeching to the ground water.
It was for the first time in the region, that a positive action could be witnessed towards Protection of River Kali. The dedicated efforts of the members and volunteers of the Research and Relief Society would certainly bear fruits and the unwarranted steps towards Revival of the dying river would surely be rewarded.
- Rainwater Harvesting- Recharging the Depleting Ground Water
It has been a matter of serious concern that the water table has been going down with each passing year and thus, the Research and Relief Society has been involved in promoting Rainwater Harvesting amongst the citizens of Meerut.
The organisation has successfully facilitated construction of Rainwater Harvesting structures in the district, over 5 structures have already been built. The Rainwater Harvesting is the need of the hour and we hereby appeal to the masses to contribute towards saving our ecology by saving water as each drop counts.
Please feel free to get in touch with us in order to get a Rainwater Harvesting Structure installed over your house or office.
- Water Sensitive Irrigation- Use only what is necessary.
It has been scientifically proved that the water table is depleting at a rate of 4 cms and increasing every year and thus it is the immense necessity that the over exploitation of the water be prevented under due circumstances. Over 60% of the ground water in the region is extracted for irrigation and exploitation of water resources needs to be checked immediately.
Research and Relief Society has been actively associated with over 300 farmers in around 27 villages around the region. Realising the ill effects of such over extraction of ground water, the organisation went ahead with promoting the water sensitive techniques of irrigation among the agricultural community. Various workshops have been organised with these farmers making them aware and sensitising them on the issues of water.
Motivated by the continuous and self less efforts of the organisation, several farmers have opted for methods like drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation etc. |
